The Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station closes after more than 50 years of operation
The end of 50 years.
Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, after more than 50 years of operation, closed in September 2024. Its site will now be transformed into a zero-carbon technology and energy hub for the East Midlands.
Arup and Uniper, the site owner, worked with Rushcliffe Borough Council to create a Local Development Order (LDO), which allows flexible planning and supports development opportunities. The redevelopment plans include 810,000 square meters of space for advanced manufacturing, green energy, and logistics. This project will generate 7,000-8,000 local jobs and add £513 million to the region’s economy annually. The LDO will help the site transition to low-carbon energy while attracting investment.
As part of the East Midlands Freeport, the redevelopment will focus on clean energy and innovation. Arup played a key role in stakeholder engagement, organizing public consultations and working closely with local authorities and the community. This project is a key step toward the UK’s net-zero goals and sets an example for future sustainable development projects across the country.
