Record year for UK small-scale battery storage
In 2024, the United Kingdom saw record-breaking growth in small-scale battery storage installations. Data from MCS, the UK accreditation body, showed September as the highest month on record, with 1,193 certified installations. Compared to 2023’s 4,965 installations, 2024 has seen a rapid rise, reaching 13,263 certified installations by the end of September.
Certification from MCS isn’t mandatory for installing battery storage alongside solar PV, but many installers opt for it. According to Alex Hughes, head of scheme at MCS, battery storage is currently the “fastest-growing technology” under the program. She encourages even more solar installers to obtain storage accreditation to meet growing demand.
Currently, over 5,000 UK contractors hold MCS certification, covering a range of technologies. Of these, 77% are certified for solar PV, 58% for heat pumps, and 34% for battery storage. Although MCS is voluntary, it’s essential for households seeking access to the Smart Export Guarantee tariff, the government’s follow-up to the previous feed-in tariff, available only with MCS-certified installers.
This surge in battery storage reflects the UK’s commitment to renewable energy, positioning battery systems as an important part of the country’s sustainable energy future.
