Plans for 3,700 acres of solar panels on farmland
Plans for a 3,700-acre solar farm in south Cambridgeshire are being discussed, with local residents invited to share their views. Kingsway Solar proposes to install solar panels on farmland near villages like West Wratting, Willingham Green, Weston Colville, and Balsham. The project includes a 14km overhead power line to connect the panels to a substation in Burwell.
Kingsway Solar’s David Vernon explained that feedback from consultations and environmental studies would help refine the project. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities to develop large-scale renewable energy projects. If approved, the solar farm could generate 500 megawatts of power annually, enough to supply 175,000 homes.
Consultation events are taking place in local villages, with an online session scheduled for 2 December. Concerns have been raised about the impact on farmland, footpaths, and biodiversity. Mike Davey, a local resident, worries about harm to the area’s natural environment. Coffee shop owner Holly Venn expressed interest in learning more about the recyclability and lifespan of solar panels.
The project requires approval from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Public consultations will remain open until 12 December, with further discussions planned for early next year.
