NatPower UK secures £60m to develop large-scale battery storage GigaParks
NatPower UK secured £60 million from European infrastructure bank Kommunalkredit to develop large-scale battery storage facilities called GigaParks. These projects include three 1-gigawatt GigaParks in North Yorkshire and Tees Valley, with a total of 100 gigawatt-hours in development.
These facilities will help the UK reach its 2030 energy storage target. Battery storage is key to managing renewable energy by storing power during low-demand times and supplying it when needed. This approach ensures a steady energy supply while supporting the shift to clean power.
The funding marks a major step in financing large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). GigaParks will help balance energy supply, reduce reliance on imported gas, and lower energy costs for consumers. By storing excess renewable energy, they make the grid more efficient and reliable.
NatPower UK’s initiative is set to create green jobs, boost local economies, and attract global investment. The company aims to build a sustainable energy system that supports communities and businesses. CEO Stefano D. M. Sommadossi highlighted the economic and environmental benefits, emphasizing that the energy transition brings growth, job creation, and lower bills. The GigaParks represent a major step toward a cleaner, more secure energy future.
