EV charging in Cornwall ‘improving all the time
Electric vehicle (EV) charging in Cornwall is steadily improving, with more chargers being installed regularly, according to Cornwall Council. Martyn Alvey, the council's cabinet member for environment and climate change, said progress is ongoing, with new charging points added daily.
Zapmap data shows a 63% increase in public chargers in Cornwall over the past year, reaching over 750 by September 2024. The council estimates that by 2030, Cornwall will need 2,600 to 3,900 fast and 410 to 610 rapid public chargers.
Hybrid car owner Tom Tubridy from Truro considered switching to an EV but opted for a hybrid due to concerns about charging accessibility in rural areas and the upfront costs. He sees hybrids as a temporary step toward sustainability.
Richard Roberts, visiting Cornwall from Bedfordshire, highlighted the growing number of chargers over the past two years. With a home charger, he can start each day with a fully charged car.
The Department for Transport emphasized the importance of EVs for cleaner transportation and outlined plans to expand public charge points, with over 70,000 already installed nationwide.
Cornwall’s efforts demonstrate progress toward a more sustainable future, aligning with national goals for increased EV adoption and improved charging infrastructure.
