Battery storage is vital for the UK’s clean energy future, ensuring reliable energy as renewables grow. The UK government aims to modernize the grid and double electricity capacity by 2050. Since 2019, global lithium-ion battery capacity has surged, demonstrating their essential role in stabilizing energy systems and reducing emissions.
Renewables like wind and solar are growing rapidly, with the UK second globally in offshore wind capacity. To support this growth, battery storage helps manage energy supply and demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. It also prevents energy waste, such as curtailment of excess wind power, saving billions in costs.
Environmentally, batteries lower greenhouse gas emissions by enabling more renewable energy use and reducing fossil fuel reliance. Economically, they cut costs for consumers by replacing expensive fossil-fuel-based power plants during peak demand.
To accelerate this transition, policy reforms are needed. Storage projects must be prioritized in energy strategies, and regulatory changes should incentivize their deployment. Simplifying grid connections and rewarding storage contributions are critical steps.
